Theatre companies are finding new programming initiatives in order to reach outside the box and serve the talents of their communities. The Vortex Theatre has been presenting readings and workshop productions of new plays for quite some time. This double-bill of two plays by local playwrights takes the process to the next level. They are being presented in a limited run with minimal technical support. Each play is different in style and subject matter but united by showcasing two local actors who are generally regarded as leaders in the profession.

Big Fat Mess, written and performed by Jen Stephenson, has seen the light of day before. In 2022, this writer reviewed the play and wondered if it would be updated this time. Astonishingly, that review was quoted in the new version. Stephenson is a highly creative and intuitive actor who brings her whole self to her work. This newer version was equally engrossing and thought provoking.

The COVID epidemic is still relevant in Jen's life. As an immunocompromised person, she developed the play in order to keep performing. Audience members wear masks and her status informs everything she does. This version is better in so many ways but still contains the effervescence of the earlier production. Jen lays her life out there with humor, sarcasm, and love. It is genuinely concerning that she does not believe she can continue to perform live. Let us hope that she finds a way in the future. She is a unique talent.

In contrast, The Conservator, written and directed by Brian Hansen is a well-researched vignette that was developed for the actor performing it, Bridget Kelly. Where Big Fat Mess is flamboyant, The Conservator is an academic approach to some very esoteric material. The only character is Mickey Van Essen, who brings us into her world of art conservation and, shall we say, related activities.

Bridget is a well-trained actress who exhibits carefully thought out action to bring the play to life. As the script is very precise and detailed, Bridget's portrayal is explicit and distinctive. This play is all about intellectual pursuits and financial gain. Calling this a vignette seems appropriate because it is the kernel of a play. We meet Mickey and she carefully and capriciously reveals her background. We are presented with activities that will drive the action. But nothing really happens. This script should become more than it is right now. It could make a good full-length play.

The marriage of these two works is not immediately apparent. Their contrasting approaches, however, make this a well-rounded evening of theatre.

Catch this production quickly. It has a limited run.
