Regional Reviews: Washington, D.C. A Good Day to Me Not to You
This production began at the Waterwell company in New York City, where playwright Lameece Issaq originated the role of the Narrator and Lee Sunday Evans, director of this production, is artistic director. Peiyi Wong has designed a sparse but evocative set for the Narrator's room in the Saint Agnes Residence: a few pieces of furniture, small high shelves (Zaytoun stays hydrated during the performance by drinking water from small paper cups placed in various parts of the stage), and such details as a radiator that fills most of the rear wall. The lighting design by Mextly Couzin cleverly highlights Zaytoun's shifting moods as she looks to the past and considers what might happen in the future. Although Zaytoun is the only performer onstage, she inhabits several characters, including outspoken Sister John; Dorothy, another nun whose emotional issues make the Narrator's seem mild; and members of her family. Without going into detail, this woman has experienced losses among the people closest to her and wonders whether she will ever have a child of her own. (On the quirkier side, she is a dental technician whose informal hobby is making plaster molds of people's teeth.) A Good Day to Me Not to You runs through May 3, 2026, in the Kogod Cradle at Arena Stage, Mead Center for American Theater, 1101 6th St. SW, Washington DC.
