Ghostlight Theatre is presenting a spirited and highly entertaining production of Paul Rudnick's comedy I Hate Hamlet. The eager and energetic cast create three-dimensional characters and plenty of laughs in this funny and charming play that is also a surprisingly touching exploration of artistic insecurity.

The story follows Andrew Rally, a young television actor who relocates to New York City, is cast to play Hamlet in Shakespeare in the Park, and moves into an apartment once inhabited by the legendary John Barrymore. However, Andrew is struggling with doubts about his talent and wrestling with the pressure of taking on such an iconic role. When Barrymore's ghost appears to help him embrace the challenge, Andrew is thrust into a comedic and heartfelt journey that pushes him to confront his fears and his ambitions.

Paul Rudnick uses a classic farcical structure in the piece, blending fast-paced comedy with elements of the supernatural to explore the anxieties that come with artistic ambition. The play balances witty dialogue, physical humor, and heartfelt moments as it follows Andrew's reluctant journey toward performing Shakespeare's most famous role. While most of the play's themes deal with acting, including the tension between commercial success and artistic integrity, and the way past legends influence modern performers, there is also a focus on self-doubt, which should be relevant to anyone who has ever felt that they don't have what it takes to succeed. The play also celebrates the power to challenge, inspire, and transform, even when approached with fear or resistance.

Brent Thomas Allen delivers a winning performance as Andrew, whose nervous charm and frantic energy perfectly capture the character's uncertainty about taking on his first Shakespeare role. Allen finds a relatable balance between sitcom-style comedy and sincere emotional conflict, which grounds the humor with authenticity. Playing opposite him is Robert Bubon in a commanding performance of John Barrymore. Bubon's swagger, theatricality, and impeccable comic timing bring an irresistible blend of vanity, charisma, and ghostly gravitas to Barrymore. Bubon expertly channels the legendary actor while also offering a warm mentor figure whose presence elevates every scene.

As Deirdre, Andrew's girlfriend, Anna K. Buckley charms with her sweet sincerity and commitment to the character's whimsical ideals. Gary, the Hollywood dealmaker who wants to pull Andrew back into television work, is played with breezy confidence and sly charm by Emmanuel D. Espinoza, serving as a hilarious counterpoint to Barrymore's classical gravitas. Andrew's real estate agent Felicia is portrayed with wonderfully outsized humor by Josie Badley, leaning into the character's enthusiasm and opportunistic tendencies, and Susan Webster shines as Lilian, Andrew's agent who has a history with Barrymore.

Bill Griffith's direction succeeds in balancing broad comedy with supernatural elements and introspective scenes. The humor lands consistently, aided by clever pacing and good comic timing from the cast. The set, though minimal, effectively establishes the feel of Andrew's New York City apartment, offering just enough elegance to suggest Barrymore's former presence while keeping the action open and energetic. Courtney Kenyon's fight choreography is rousing yet still comical, and the costumes by Miranda Bloom are great.

Ghostlight's production of I Hate Hamlet is delightful, filled with charming performances and direction that plays up the mischief of Barrymore's ghost while honoring the play's blend of comedy and heartfelt reflection.
