When you think of King Henry VIII of England, what is the first thing that comes to mind? For many, it is his many wives accumulated during his lifetime in search for a healthy, male heir. But must those wives' stories be reduced to a footnote in the life of a man? This is what the musical extravaganza which is Six sets out to ask, playing at the Durham Performing Arts Center through November 2.

Six is a vibrant, modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII, reimagined as a high-energy pop concert and singing competition. The musical transforms history into a dazzling spectacle where each queen steps up to the mic to share her story and to compete for the title of lead singer by proving who suffered the most at the hands of their infamous husband. Yet, as the competition unfolds, the very premise of the contest is challenged, asking why their worth should be defined by their connection to Henry rather than by their own identities. The queens ultimately reject their rivalry, reclaim their individuality, unite to rewrite their own story, and create their own happy endings.

Creators Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow drew inspiration from contemporary pop icons, blending historical storytelling with modern musical influences to create a show that can captivate a modern theatre audience. Both won Tony awards for their amazing score, and harkening references of current pop stars such as Ariana Grande, Lily Allen, and Beyoncé.

Gabriella Slade also won a Tony for her costume design, blending with the lively lighting design by acclaimed designer Tim Deiling and Emma Bailey's scenic design to create an amazing visual feast. The choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille is some of the most entertaining and engaging this reviewer has seen on the stage in some time.

Each queen has her time to shine, making it a true ensemble piece with none showing up the other (however hard they may try). There is the powerful Emma Elizabeth Smith as Catherine of Aragon, the playful Nella Cole as Anne Boleyn, a heartfelt Kelly Denice Taylor as Jane Seymour, a confident Hailey Alexis Lewis as Anna of Cleves, the vibrant Alizé Cruz as Katherine Howard, and the inspired choice of Tasia Jungbauer as Catherine Parr.

Six reminds us how important the roles of women have been in shaping history and how they still are making “herstory” today, shaping their own stories out of the mire in which society may pigeonhole them.

Six runs through November 2, 2025, at the Durham Performing Arts Center, 123 Vivian St. Durham NC. For tickets and information, please visit www.dpacnc.com or call 919-680-2787. For information on the tour, visit sixonbroadway.com/ustour/.
