The quartet exhibit tight harmonies and gorgeous notes throughout all of the songs they sing. Formed in 2015 by Scott Garnham and Simon Schofield, the group has since toured internationally. While Arizona Musicfest audiences may have recognized several songs and medleys from the group's previous local appearances, the concert also included a handful of fresh selections and featured solos. The lineup has shifted over the years, and for this appearance, Garnham and Schofield were joined by Craig Mather and Kieran Brown. Each brings a strong, distinctive vocal presence, and under the assured music direction of James Doughty, the quartet delivered rich, polished harmonies. Doughty's leadership of the excellent four-piece band was equally impressive. The majority of the evening comprised fun medleys from stage shows that have been turned into movie musicals. These included the fast and high-flying "Defying Gravity" from Wicked that started the evening off, and a pairing of "Tonight" and "Somewhere" from West Side Story that were full of emotion. A pairing of "Greased Lighting" from Grease and "The Time Warp" from The Rocky Horror Show in the second half of the show made for a fun moment. Pop and rock tunes were also present in a fantastic medley of Elton John songs from his autobiographical film Rocket Man and a soulful set of rhythm and blues songs from The Blues Brothers. A Mamma Mia! medley featured some fun dance moves as did an energetic mix of songs from Saturday Night Fever. A fantastic medley of Elvis Presley songs featured a lovely take of two of his most beloved tunes, "Suspicious Minds" and "Can't Help Falling in Love," that highlighted the gorgeous harmonies and bright vocals. One song they said was one of the hardest to sing and one they've sung at all of their shows was "Bohemian Rhapsody," which was in the film of the same name. It received a fantastic delivery with crisp, bright, and soaring vocals from all four members of the group. The only song that didn't quite fit into the movie musical theme was the Beatles' "Hey Jude," which ended the evening in a moving way. While the concert was a virtually non-stop parade of well-known songs, the two selections from Les Misérables were standouts, as they've been for their previous Musicfest shows. "Bring Him Home" was spellbinding, and their encore of "One Day More" was a perfect end to an energetic and highly entertaining evening. All four members of the group delivered charming and comical patter between the songs. About halfway through the 95 minute show, Doughty and the band presented a fantastic theme from the James Bond films that allowed The Barricade Boys a costume change. A Barricade Boys concert feels like a full throttle celebration of musical theatre, bursting with an upbeat drive, powerful harmonies, emotional ballads, and a playful sense of fun that highlights their considerable talent. Seeing the joy they bring, it's hard not to wish that Arizona Musicfest would make their return a regular part of its season. The Barricade Boys: Broadway at the Movies performed on February 2, 2026, at Arizona Musicfest, 7950 E Thompson Peak Pkwy, Scottsdale AZ.
